Rachel's Gift to Charity: Water

RACHEL’S GIFT. ONE YEAR LATER.
Monday, on the one year anniversary of Rachel’s death, our staff took her mom and grandparents to Ethiopia to visit some of the 60,000 people Rachel helped. Watch the video:

Tekloini Assefa stood in the middle of a huge crowd, surrounded by Ethiopian priests, mothers, and children. Rachel Beckwith’s mom, Samantha, Rachel’s grandparents, and others in our group sat listening. We had all flown halfway around the world just two days earlier to visit some of the 149 communities Rachel helped in the north of Ethiopia.
Samantha Beckwith
“Samantha, your little girl is an inspiration to us all. We have heavy hearts imagining what it was like to lose Rachel due to such horrific circumstances. It is something no parent ever wants to contemplate, let alone live through. Even more remarkable is that Rachel developed such a big heart from such a young age — that she understood and felt the pain of others on the other side of the world. To give up her birthday presents so that other children can improve their lives, is the most beautiful gift a person can give.”
A little over a year ago, Rachel was your average nine-year-old. She loved Taylor Swift and had a secret crush on Justin Bieber, although she’d never admit it. She had a loving family and a heart that wanted to solve every problem she saw in this world. Once, she cut off all her hair and donated it to make wigs for kids who had cancer. So when she sat in church one day and heard Scott Harrison from charity: water give a talk about how kids her age in Africa didn’t have clean water to drink, she immediately decided to help.
With her mom’s encouragement, she created a fundraising page on mycharitywater.org, telling her family and friends that she didn’t want presents for her ninth birthday. Instead, she asked them to donate $9, as she was turning 9. Rachel wanted kids like her to have clean water to drink.
Rachel
She had a big goal: to raise $300 and give 15 people clean drinking water. She fell a little short, raising $220, and told her mom that she’d try harder next year.
A month later, Rachel was in a tragic car accident on highway I-90 near Seattle, Washington. A trailer had jack-knifed into a logging truck, sending logs tumbling down the freeway. More than a dozen cars were caught in the pile-up, and the trailer smashed into the back of Rachel’s car.
She was the only person critically injured, and on July 23rd, 2011, she was taken off life support.
When the news spread about Rachel’s story and her birthday wish, people all around the world began to donate on her page. Some gave $9, some $19, leaving comments like “This is the rest of my month’s salary…..” A month later, 30,000 people had given more than $1.2 million.
All of us at charity: water were blown away by the generosity. The comments and notes that were left on Rachel’s page caused many tears in the coming months, and Rachel’s story continues to inspire us today.
Last year, we sent 100% of the money from Rachel’s campaign to our partners in Tigray, Ethiopia, and they began to construct water projects for people in need. We made a promise to Rachel’s mom that one day she’d come with us to Ethiopia to meet some of the people Rachel’s wish had helped.
Monday, we fulfilled that promise.
Ethiopia
On the one-year anniversary of Rachel’s death, we woke up early, at 5:30 A.M. We piled into Land Rovers and began the two-hour drive to Kal Habel village in the north of Ethiopia. We heard the community had planned both a memorial service in Rachel’s honor and a celebration of her life.
We didn’t know it then, but honor would become the theme of our entire day.
First, we visited a church. The priests there knew all about our arrival, and they knew Rachel’s story. They told us they had been up since midnight, praying that God would keep Rachel’s soul in peace. A photo of Rachel stood on the ledge, surrounded by candles. We paused, listening to the priests recite their prayers, singing ancient Ethiopian hymns over Samantha and her parents.
From the church, we walked to a new well nearby that was funded by Rachel’s donations. We cut the ribbon and watched water splash into bright yellow jerry cans. This water didn’t have dirt or leeches in it, and it didn’t carry deadly disease. It wasn’t far away from people’s homes, and they didn’t have to walk for hours to find it. It was right there, in their village, and it was crystal clear. To prove it, Samantha took a long drink.
The children wrote notes about Rachel, and handed them one by one to Samantha. A famous priest read a poem he wrote especially for the occasion, and then the village gave gifts to Rachel’s family. A mother from the village made a speech and said Rachel’s story would be a lesson to their children. She said that all the mothers in her village were praying for Samantha. Another community sectioned off a plot of land and called it Rachel’s Park. They invited Samantha and her grandparents each to plant a tree in Rachel’s memory.
Memorial
Near the well, our local partners, Relief Society of Tigray (REST), commissioned a marble sign. It read “Rachel’s great dream, kindness and vision of a better world will live with and among us forever.”

Her photo was nested in the marble, a permanent fixture in Kal Habel village. It will serve as a reminder to all the mothers who draw water from this well that a mother’s tragic loss and a child’s dream brought clean water to their village.

60,000 people in over 100 villages will drink clean water because of Rachel’s wish.

Rachel’s mom, Samantha, continues to fundraise in Rachel’s honor.
Visit her current fundraising campaign to donate.

Time to SHINE!!!

I think this Marianne Williamson quote is like a laser beam, right on point.  It's as if she took the essence of my message and attached the perfect words to represent the truth that rings so loud and clear in my being.  Every time I come across this quote, it's a reminder of the connection we have to each other and to our Creator.  This always reminds me to drop the ego and embrace the magnificence which is alive and well in me and also in you.  God is love and light.  And there is a truth that resides in your heart.  The truth of who you are if you strip away the past, the fears, the insignificant dramas, all of our judgments and shortcomings.  Then, you can see the glory of God's perfection in each unique individual person and in each blade of grass, snowflake, drop of the ocean, etc.  I hope you allow this little signpost to open your heart a little bit more and guide you to yet another adventurous side of you which dares to focus on the pure potential buried inside  asking to be unleashed.  Let yourself get wild, try something new, do a little dance, make a little love lol...you know!  I am taking on the challenge as well, taking fearlessness to a whole 'nother level!  Be you, and enjoy being you...if others don't get it, believe me, it doesn't matter.  Free yourself from the prison of having to please others and fit inside their box.  You will discover a miraculous new world awaits...one without limits, full of joy and enthusiasm.  Laugh out loud for real...your spiritual high will be uplifting.  Even those who look puzzled will be changed for the better.  That kind of joy serves as a reminder of what it was like when we were children, living in the moment, free to just be.  Most of all, it is a reminder of Heaven, the Home we return to when we accept the invitation to remember.

In Love, Light, & Joy...

Under Construction

I have totally been "Under Construction" and I am very excited to share what I have been up to so far this year.  Transformation is a wonderful thing if you allow yourself to let go of the old and let God create the new.  Stay tuned!

Love and sunshine :)

Remember The Cause

It’s amazing what this world is coming to!!

Honest people forgetting what they’re supposed to do.

It’s like I’m livin’ in a dream with no possibilities

Of waking up to harness my own capabilities

Restricted by the rules…created for the masses

When the people enforcing them are all acting like @sses

And they feel like they don’t have to follow what they’re preaching

Don’t do what I do; yeah that’s what they’re teaching

Revolutions on the tips of our tongues

We’re taking freedoms from the lives of our young

It won’t be long before the damage is done

And we’ll be talking to our daughters and sons

About a time not so distant when we had all these freedoms

We took them for granted

We lost all our chances

No one fought back

We laid on our @sses

Lost in our cable

Food on the table

Blind to the fact

That we are all able

To make a decision

Escape from this prison

All we need now is a dream and a vision

The cost of feeding the world is less than waging war

Yet we prefer to spend money on weapons instead of helping the poor

You can camp out for toys and black Friday sales

But do it at a park and camp out in jail

So what do you do when they're coming for you?

Do you lie on your back or put on your shoes?

Run for the hills deep in the night

be a symbol for truth...a beacon of light!

But it's hard to shine when they cover your ember

while people are chanting the 5th of November

So remember the cause and remember the reasons

fighting for rights should never be treason

I guess its true; everything has its season

but little by little we’re losing our freedoms

You never think it’ll happen to you

cause you're only aware of what you see in the news

look what she did, look what he did

look at those stars adopting these kids

look over here,look over there

Got your attention? Now stay in your chair!

It's easy to distract and they know this for certain

just, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain

I’ve never been one to believe in conspiracies

But we’ve gotten soft with our responsibilities

Of questioning the facts for the sake of our liberties

Instead we get lost in our day to day activities.

They have us believing that we have to change our ways

No longer Merry Christmas,it’s now Happy Holidays

We give a little here and we give a little there

And before we even know it we’ll have nothing left to spare

So what do you do when they’re coming for you?

When morals and values are nothing but abused

It’s time to start a new revolution

where violence and hate is NOT a solution

but what can you do when they allow institutions

to contaminate the world with corporate pollution?

leaders consumed by the price of their greed

while people are hungry and full of disease

we have people accusing the smallest percent

as if that’s gonna make the smallest of dents

global change,it begins with ourselves

stop blaming other people and start with yourself

You have to work hard if you want to succeed

you have to be better, you have to believe

Reap what you sow, expand what you know

on a rolling rock moss never grows

if you’re not moving fast I’ll settle for slow

but never stop moving like water you’ll flow

So take a step back and realize your role

Before you dig yourself into an even deeper hole

Stop blaming others for your lack of ambition

Lets’ start a world with a brand new tradition

One full of honor and moral conviction

And if that’s not enough then heed my prediction

We’re gonna be lost in a world of restrictions

A mass reproduction of global submission

So start with yourself and become the solution

That’s how you start a real revolution

We need to understand our own evolution

Before we give in to the final conclusion

So remember the cause and remember the reasons

But don’t let our freedoms be gone with the season…

New Year, New You, New Me!

Happy New Year!!! So, here we are at week 2 of 2012.  The New Years Resolutions are still ringing and all the buzz about this being an epic year is still fresh.  This year is a special one for many because there has been so much talk of the Mayan calendar ending on December 21st of the year 2012, then there is the Zombie Apocalypse, the presidential elections, the collapse of the American Dollar and much more.  Quite an exciting year of uncertainties to look forward to.  If you want to look at it this way, it could be the end of the world as we know it, so live it up right?! HAHA!

I have my own perspective on 2012.  I, too, have decided to begin anew.  2011 marked the end of my old life and I even got a tattoo to mark a new beginning.  The tattoo is a key and it symbolizes my choice to remain open and willing to change.  I got it on my arm, very visible, to remind myself to leave behind the old destructive habits, worries, doubts and fears of having to live up to anybody's expectations.  Jesus died on a cross so that all of that stuff would be gone, so leaving it around in my thought closet is just nonsense....finished! 2012 means renewing my spiritual vows, so to speak. My key is heart-shaped.  I am now experiencing life through the filter of love and teaching others about this awesome opportunity.  With this key, I embrace God's plan and allow Him to open new doors.  It is all about FAITH...my commitment to really "Let Go and Let God."  My key, is mainly a celebration in appreciation for the Spirit of God which is alive in me.

John 14: 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.   15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

John 15: 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.
                                                                                                             Jesus

The world will have you believe that The Bible is too this or too that...complicated, harsh, boring, false, controlling, blah blah blah!  I know that it can be if you believe it is so.  But, if you open your heart, silence your thoughts and basically, get out of the way...it is pure nourishment for your Spirit.  I am aware of all the excuses that one could use for not giving it a chance, including the one where you tell yourself you already gave it a chance and it didn't work.  My previous excuses will probably outnumber yours lol.  If it changed a person like me, believe me, it can and will blow your mind...but only if you let it.  Still not convinced?!  No problem.  Just know that you are reading these words for a reason.   Go ahead and read the words of Jesus again.  Don't let the hypocrites of the world convince you that religion is the same as faith.  I know there are many Christians that are misrepresentations of Christ.  Don't miss out on Heaven because you are basing your understanding of The Bible on a picture that has been painted for you by a "religionist" or the rest of the world.  Jesus himself was the opposite of the "religionists" of his time.  Just saying, find out for yourself! Give your heart to God and experience true love and true freedom.  Don't let anybody sell you a counterfeit spirituality. If you want the key, it's free.  And if you want to talk to someone who won't judge you, won't condemn you, will listen to your perspective and will love you just the way you are...call me, write me, message me, text me, you get the point! Don't hesitate, this message is for you and you know it.  THIS IS MY YEAR...WOOOHOOO!  IS THIS YOUR YEAR?! CLAIM IT AND RECEIVE IT!
I love you guys!
